ACTIVE SENTENCES AND PASSIVE SENTENCES



 1. Active Sentences and Passive Sentences

 

a. The Cat ate the mouse.

b. The mouse was eaten by the cat.

(a) and (b) have the same meaning,

c. [Anton] opened [the window].  


             S            V           O

then become:

d. [The window] was opened [by Anton].

                S                V               by+O

In (c): The object in an active sentence becomes the subject in a passive sentence.

In (d): The subject in a active sentence is the object of by in the by-phrase in a passive sentence.

 

2. Form of the Passive


Be + Past Participle

Example:

a. Rice is grown by the farmers.

b. I was surprised by the news.

c. The car will be cleaned by Fanny.
